We have made significant contribution towards understanding the molecular mechanism of neuro-degeneration in the pathogenesis of neurotropic virus like JEV and Chandipura virus (CHPV). By exploring the pathways which are involved in inflammation, our laboratory has identified minocycline, a second generation tetracycline, with therapeutic potential in JE. Based upon pre clinical study at National Brain Research Center. Recently a Phase III clinical trial has been completed at King George Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, where minocycline has been used as a therapy for Japanese Encephalitis patients.
Our work has not only highlighted the importance of neuro-immune response in regulating viral infection of the brain, but also has been instrumental in filling the void needed to bridge the gap between translational and basic research centering JE and other acute encephalitis syndrome (AES).
Our current research is focused on identifying the role of neural stem cells and glial cells in the healthy and diseased central nervous system, with specific reference to CNS infections, and neurodegenerative diseases. Our work not only provides a new and general principle for cure of the whole spectrum of neuro-inflammatory diseases that include infection of the CNS, but also other neurodegenerative disorders that affects millions of people worldwide.
